Quran on Fasting (Ramadan & General)

Surah Al-Baqarah – Verse on Fasting

Translation:

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain taqwa (piety).”

Dua for Fasting on Muharram (Ashura/10th Muharram)

Fasting on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) is highly recommended in Islam.

Dua for Intention to Fast on Ashura in Arabic:

نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أَصُوْمَ غَدًا عَاشُورَاء لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى

Transliteration:

Nawaitu an asuma ghadan ʿĀshūrāʾ lillāhi taʿālā.

English Translation:

“I intend to fast tomorrow on Ashura for the sake of Allah, the Most High.”

💡 This is a traditional intention. Not obligatory to say aloud.

Dua for Fasting on Muharram (Ashura/10th Muharram)

Reference:

There is no specific verbal dua (like “نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أَصُوْمَ…”) for fasting on Ashura in the Qur’an or in any authentic hadith — even for Sunni Muslims.

What the Sunnah Teaches (Sunni Viewpoint):

The Prophet ﷺ never instructed a verbal dua or wording for the intention of fasting — whether for Ramadan, Ashura, or any voluntary fast.

Instead, the Prophet ﷺ taught us that:

“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1907

So according to Sunni Islamic teachings, especially the Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools:

  • The niyyah (intention) is in the heart

  • No verbal niyyah is required or legislated in hadith

So Why Do People Say: “نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أَصُوْمَ غَدًا عَاشُورَاء…”?

“نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أَصُوْمَ غَدًا عَاشُورَاء لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى”
(“I intend to fast tomorrow on Ashura for the sake of Allah.”)

This is a fiqh-based educational phrase, used by scholars to help Muslims:

  • Teach niyyah to children or new Muslims

  • Make the intention consciously and clearly

  • Bring focus to worship

✅ It’s permissible and helpful, but not required, and not from hadith or Qur’an.

What Should a Sunni Muslim Do for Ashura Fasting?

Just intend in your heart that you are fasting for the sake of Allah on the Day of Ashura.
That is completely sufficient and fully valid.

Transliteration:

`Allahumma innī laka ṣumtu, wa bika āmantu, wa ʿalayka tawakkaltu, wa ʿalā rizqika aftartu, fa-taqabbal minnī.

Translation:

“O Allah! I fasted for You, believed in You, trusted You, and with Your provision I break my fast. So accept it from me.”
